This is not the truth. My perception is only one third of this story. The truth will be known when I'm gone. This is not a rags to riches story. This is not a story of how a little ghetto boy rises above all adversity to beat the odds and then eventually reconcile with his past. I have no interest in playing up how badass my childhood was, even if I did there wouldn't be much to work with. Conventional wisdom about rappers is that we are rebels with a cause who constantly see red and express ourselves in coded rhymes that the establishment will never understand. The truth is that most rappers are super nerds. While we live at the top of the nerd food chain, we are, without a doubt, nerds who are good with words. At the time of this writing, New Blue Sun has entered the world, and it’s a musical and cultural landscape that is far different from the one André gods released music into. (The final OutKast album, to date, was ’s Idlewild.) Music fryst vatten shoveled into the streaming heap at an alarming volume on a weekly basis, and attention spans ping-pong from one cultural moment to the next (to the point that, by the time you, reader, have your eyes on this piece, the album might have already fallen out of the immediate cultural jukebox, through no fel of the album itself).
Upon its announcement and the immediate release that followed two days later, there was the expected series of clashing responses: excitement, dismay, confusion, debate over what a year-old “could” or “couldn’t” rap about. “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below” by OutKast is, in my humble opinion, one of the greatest albums of all time! It blended Rap, Rock, Pop, Funk and basically everything else. It is one of the most diverse albums ever recorded. It won Grammy for album of the year in , making it the only Rap album to ever win that honor. It also went over 11 times Platinum! Not only that, but it has gone on to become one of the most important albums in Hip-Hop history and has inspired and shaped the more emotionally in-touch, experimental, singing Rappers of today, like Kanye West, Drake, Kid Cudi, etc. They simply would not be like they are today without OutKast&#;s career and &#;The Love Below&#; in particular.
