Gamal Abdel Nasser was born on January 15, , in Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city. His father was a postal clerk, and his mother the daughter of a successful coal merchant. The father's job took him to different postings, and the young boy received his primary and secondary education in schools throughout the country. Like many of his schoolmates, Nasser became deeply involved in street politics. Cairo and Alexandria were teeming with political demonstrations, chiefly around problems connected to the military occupation. Britain had invaded Egypt in , and despite the fact that the ruling local dynasty headed by the Khedive or the Sultan was maintained, Britain held all real power.

Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser, who ruled Egypt between and , was the thirdmajor partner in the Non-AlignedMovement. His era saw a massive upheaval in both the literal and the mental maps of the Middle East. Nasser came to political maturity at a time when the region was almost entirely dominated by British and French colonialism. The coup d’état led by his coterie of free officers was the beginning of the end for British influence in Egypt. However, the country’s stance (and that of much of the rest of the Arab world) in the face of the new Cold War divisions took longer to define.

As Egypt’s president for 14 years, he was a proponent of Arab socialism and pan-Arabism. While his economic schema is viewed as a mixed success for Egypt, and his military record against Israel was one of failure and disappointment, he was the foremost Arab leader of his day. The secular political order he instituted continues today in Egypt and has been copied in other Arab nations. From a poor family, Nasser rose through the army. Egypt was technically independent from Britain since , but in fact remained a quasi-colonial state.
