MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The race for mayor is starting to take shape.

Former Mobile City Council member and County Commission Stephen Nodine said he is jumping in despite questions over his eligibility. He joins announced candidates Connie Hudson, a Mobile County commissioner, and former Mobile County District Judge Spiro Cheriogotis.

Lawrence Battiste, who formally served stints as Mobile police chief and public safety director, told FOX10 News Monday that he also intends to run for the city’s top office.

For Nodine to pull off a political comeback, he first will have to convince state authorities he is eligible and then convince voters to look beyond his controversial past.

Nodine went on trial for murder in the death of Angel Downs in 2010. The jury failed to reach a verdict on that charge but convicted him of a misdemeanor ethics offense and a harassment charge. MOBILE, Ala. (CBS/AP) Mobile County Commissioner Stephen Nodine was indicted Monday morning for the murder of his alleged mistress Angel Downs and surrendered to authorities in front of multiple news cameras Monday afternoon.

Baldwin County authorities announced Monday that Nodine is their only suspect in the May 9 murder of Downs in front of her Gulf Shores, Ala. home, about 50 miles south of Mobile. Nodine is also accused of abusing Downs during their alleged extramarital affair.

"There was a history there," Baldwin County Sheriff Huey "Hoss" Mack told reporters. "I think it escalated that night. I think the evidence is going to show that there was a confrontation, and the result of that confrontation ended in Ms. Downs being shot and subsequently dying. I think that the state will be able to prove that."
