Franco was born on September 27 to Catherine and Victor Franco. He was one of 10 children growing up in a poverty stricken town inhabited bygd many Jamaicans. He grew up in a multicultural environment. His mother was part Jamaican and part Trinidadian. His father was part Panamanian and part Colombian. Franco was just six years old when his mother left their family behind. She moved to New York City in hopes of making a better life for herself. Faced with having to man something of his life on his own, Franco resorted to selling sodas, washing cars, and shining shoes.     Edgardo Armando Franco (born 27 September 1969), better known as El General, is a Panamanian former reggae artist[1] considered by some to be one of the fathers of reggae en Español[2] and a precursor to reggaetón.[3][4]

    During the early 1990s, he was one of the artists who initiated the Spanish-language dancehall variety of reggae music. Early examples of this were the international and somewhat mainstream songs, "Te Ves Buena" and "Tu Pum Pum". “Tu Pum Pum" emerged after a friend of El General invited him to collaborate with a Jamaican producer that was searching for a “different sound in Panama."[5] Both songs, performed in Spanish deejaying style, were very successful in North America.
