Irene Ryan was an American actress and comedienne who appeared in vaudeville shows, film, television, and theatre. She is best known as “Granny” from The Beverly Hillbillies, a role she played from 1962 to 1971. She was nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Musical at the 27th Annual Tony Awards for originating the role of Berthe in Stephen Schwartz’s Pippin. She passed away on April 26, 1973.

IRENE RYAN (Berthe) made her show business début at the age of eleven and since then has appeared in every area of the entertainment field. For nine years she starred as Granny on the hit series The Beverly Hillbillies. Born Irene Noblette, she became a headliner at top vaudeville houses, including The Palace on Broadway. Teamed with Tim Ryan, whom she later married, Ryan and Noblette were among the top stars of the heyday of vaudeville and were equally successful on radio, known simply as Tim and Ire

Posted: 10/28/08 at 10:53pm OK. This issue has been bugging me for years, and I was wondering if someone could clear it up.
Irene Ryan was the original grandmother, Berthe, in "Pippin" on Broadway in 1972, singing the fantastic song, "No Time At All" and getting a posthumous Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical (she lost to Patricia Elliot of "A Little Night Music.")
All during the 70s and 80s, people would swear to me that Ryan (Granny from "The Beverly Hillbillies" and the benefactress of the Irene Ryan acting award) "just finished her number, walked off stage and dropped dead right there."
Or something to that effect. Or even that she had collapsed onstage during the applause and died barely in the wings, etc.
I recently did an internet search on the topic and found lots of discrepancies between the versions. (So, I'm hoping th
