    For the first time, one book has scooped both the Cilip Carnegie Award for outstanding writing and the Kate Greenaway Award for outstanding illustration.

    A Monster Calls is based on an idea by the late children’s author Siobhan Dowd. The book follows the emotional rites of passage of 13-year-old Conor, whose mother is dying of cancer.

    Terrified and trying to deny the inevitable, Conor believes the yew tree outside his bedroom window turns into a monster at midnight and forces him to listen to stories, while demanding ‘the truth’ from the boy. 

    Heartbreakingly poignant, yet sharply witty in places, the story is stunningly enhanced by Jim Kay’s atmospheric black, white and grey illustrations which perfectly capture the  terror stalking Conor.
