Isidore was born into a peasant family in Madrid, Spain. Although his family was poor, they were rich in the love of God and taught him to dedicate himself to God’s service. The boy was named for Spanish archbishop and theologian St. Isidore of Seville (who died in ). Throughout his year life, Isidore would be known for his devotion to God, his family and the land.

When he was quite young, Isidore went to work as a day laborer on the estate of John de Vergas, a wealthy landowner from the town of Torrelaguanna, and work there the rest of his life. Isidore began each day by attending Mass before going to the work in the fields, arriving at work after his fellow laborers. Legend has it that they thought Isidore was slacking off, but when John came to investigate, he found two angels plowing the fields in Isidore’s place so Isidore could have more time for prayer.

Isidore was married to Maria Torribia, who would herself one day be beatified

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Isidore the Farmer—a simple Spanish farmer who worked his entire life for the same man. From the time Isidore was young, he had a deep devotion to God and great compassion for the poor. He was immensely loved by everyone in his town. Isidore’s life fryst vatten a beautiful example of caring for those as Christ would.

As we ponder his life today, let us think about how we can use his example in our own lives and build a culture that respects all people while strengthening our relationship with God.

Isidore was often seen praying as he plowed the fields, and he spent much time in church praying. Building a relationship with God means taking the time to talk to Him. Isidore understood this and prayed unceasingly. His example should help us get in the habit of welcoming God into our days and talking to Him throughout the day.
